It starts with a goal
Expect questions about the reason for care, health history, current medicines, allergies and earlier reactions.
Visits and pharmacies
Whether the visit is online or in a room, the useful test is the same: a real clinician learns enough to make a reasoned decision, names the medicine clearly and stays available for questions.
A guide to finding care, not a care service.

In the patient’s state
An “online prescriber” is the doctor or other clinician who writes a prescription after a video, phone or message visit. As of September 2026, an online prescriber generally needs a licence or other permission from the medical board in the patient’s state at the time of the visit.
As of September 2026, the United States has no single national medical licence. Some states have agreements, called compacts, that make it quicker to get licences in several states, but each one is still a separate state licence.
As of September 2026, states do not use one shared rule for online prescribing, so a method allowed in one state may be limited in another.
What the visit needs to do
A visit can use video, phone, secure messages or forms. The format matters less than whether the clinician learns enough about you: your health history, medicines, allergies and past reactions.
Expect questions about the reason for care, health history, current medicines, allergies and earlier reactions.
The state medical boards’ shared policy also says a fixed questionnaire by itself is not an adequate assessment when it cannot gather the needed information or support follow-up questions.
When the proper assessment calls for an exam or test, the clinician is expected to arrange it or refer the patient for it.
The state boards that license doctors share a national body, the Federation of State Medical Boards, and it holds any video, phone or message visit to the bar an in-person visit must clear. That is the boards’ own shared policy for doctors.
If a compounded medicine comes up
Compounding means a pharmacy mixing a medicine itself, instead of handing over a finished product made in a drug factory. A business that does this is called a compounder. Federal law allows two kinds.
As of September 2026, a “503A” pharmacy, named after a section of the law, prepares medicine to fill a valid prescription written for a single, named patient.
As of September 2026, larger operations called “503B outsourcing facilities” may make batches of germ-free medicine without a prescription naming each patient.
As of September 2026, a 503B facility must follow drug-factory quality rules, and FDA inspects it. An ordinary 503A pharmacy is watched day to day mainly by its state board of pharmacy.
For you, the useful step is the same either way: get the pharmacy’s name and look it up.
FDA warns that people treated online may be left unsure which pharmacy prepared their medicine, so the pharmacy’s name is the first thing to ask for.
A short checking routine
A polished website cannot answer these checks. Public licence records can.
Before moving on
Keep the visit fee, medicine, tests and follow-up in separate lines. That makes the next desk useful.
